Accepting THAT call!

Hi..... I had an offer 2 days ago. The donor was a brain death. They said that his family member / health care surrogate was asked questions that he didn't know answers to.

One was that he "kind of" thought the donor had syphilis at one time. The other was that he's unsure about Hep B.

I was OK with the Hep B because post xplant they can give me stuff for that. I'm not sure about having both though. Anyone have anything close to this topic to give advice or thoughts??

(the donor's liver ended up "deemed untransplantable" {hospitals words} ....so I didn't have to choose to accept it or not.

I think maybe wouldn't be so bad to go for it being they can give meds for both - however my fiance says that's just inviting troubles before I'm even closed up and out of surgery.

Advice...Anyone??

Thanks,

Shawna

Hello Shawna, honestly those things are treatable and your donor would have been tested for those prior to transplanting. They also would give you a heads up and start you on Antibiotics prior or during transplant to decrease the possibility of contracting said infections.

I guess it depends on you, how long you have been waiting and the urgency of your situation. I contacted CMV from my donor but it was worth it to be alive. I am almost 5 years post now. I definitely have issues and life is not perfect. You have to make lots of adjustments. Honestly I still feel it’s worth it and I do not regret a thing. I feel blessed every day.
